SCHOOL BUS DRIVER
GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES: Operate school buses under all types of weather conditions, including but not limited to: fog, rain, hail, sleet, snow and ice. Transport students and other authorized persons over regular “to and from school” routes 5 days per week and on field, extra-curricular and special extra activity trips as authorized by the school district officials.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
- Drive a school bus or other approved District vehicle to scheduled routes, 5 days per week and/or on all types of trips in support of District approved activities, both within and outside the District boundaries.
- Perform required operational and safety inspections of the school bus/vehicle and related equipment. Be knowledgeable of the installation of fuel, oil and coolant, tire inflation and safety equipment, fire extinguishers, road flares or markers, sanders, tire chains and first aid kits.
- Clean school bus/vehicle including interior/exterior sweeping and washing; mop floors as needed; upon returning from an activity trip the driver shall assure that the windshield and rear window of the vehicle are clean, the interior completely clear of all litter before vehicle is to leave on another trip. Operate two-way radios as needed, both within and outside District boundaries.
- Maintain control of student passengers as related to safety. Report unsafe acts or conditions which require the attention of any person other than the driver.
- He/she will abstain from the use of tobacco, drugs and intoxicating liquors while in charge of the bus, and that he/she will not be under the influence of intoxicating liquors or drugs in any degree whatsoever while in charge of the bus, and that he/she will not permit any other person to use intoxicating liquors, drugs or tobacco in any form in or about the school bus while he/she is in charge of the school bus.
- He/she will report promptly to the proper authority all vehicle repairs or issues of any kind.
- Operate a school bus/vehicle in accordance with the law of the State of Washington and policies promulgated by the Superintendent of Public Instruction.
- Perform basic first aid as appropriate, which may include CPR.
- Legible and accurate completion of forms, records, time sheets, trip requests, route maps, trouble reports, misconduct reports, accident reports and any other clerical type of forms or documents necessary.
- Responsible to the Director and Assistant Director of Maintenance and Transportation.
REQUIRED CAPABILITIES:
- Sufficient command of the English language to communicate with students, parents, District staff and other concerned people regarding all aspects of their job related activities.
- Must possess sufficient physical strength and agility to assist ill or physically impaired students to enter or exit a school vehicle.
- Sufficient strength and agility to move about in a vehicle as required to provide assistance to students in evacuation.
- Hearing capabilities must be sufficient to detect and distinguish traffic sounds occurring from any direction outside the bus, such as horns, whistles, sirens, trains and bells, from a distance which will allow adequate time for defensive or evasive action to avoid a hazardous situation.
- Vision must be 20/40 in best eye, with or without correction; approximately 140 degrees peripheral, which as a single criteria shall not be excluding; and depth perception adequate to reasonably determine from a stationary or moving vehicle; eye coordination to avoid diplopia; color vision must be adequate to distinguish the colors of a traffic light.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Minimum age: 21
- Possess a valid state driver’s license with a C.D.L., Class B with a passenger endorsement and an S endorsement. Training will be provided, if needed, to obtain the proper licenses and endorsements.
- Possess a current and valid first aid card. Training will be provided to obtain a first aid card, if needed.
- Meet the physical and mental standards necessary to perform the duties, tasks and responsibilities of a school bus driver as described herein.
- Possess a current and valid Medical Examination Report.
- Possess and maintain an acceptable driving record.
- Minimum driving experience of two years preferred but not required.
- Continue to meet all State and Federal regulations regarding School Bus Drivers and CDL.
