POSITION: Paraeducator - Seconday Special Education Resource Room
QUALIFICATIONS:
The special education para educator, under the direct supervision of the special education teacher will assist in the instruction of students. Instructional methods and materials will be assigned to the para educator by the teacher to use with each student or group of students.
Para educators must meet the highly qualified requirements through:
- Two years of study at an institution of higher education, or
- Hold an associate degree, or
- Take the ETS ParaPro Assessment Pathway
GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assist individual students and small groups of identified special education students in Instructional/Vocational activities that have been planned, assigned and organized by the professional staff. Examples of this would be:
1. Assist in teaching academic skills;
2. Assist in teaching independent living: budgeting, cooking, leisure time activities, sewing, safety, and citizenship.
3. Assist in pre-vocational exercises: filling out job applications, interviewing, time and management, making change, etc.
4. Assist the teacher in preparation,maintenance,assembling, and returning instructional materials.
5. Assist in securing, preparing and operating instructional media and technology as directed by the professional staff.
6. Assist in gathering materials relevant for student use as directed by the professional staff.
7. Assist in gathering and organizing data and information as directed.
8. Assist in preparation of schedules, charts and rosters for special education students as directed by professional staff.
9. Assist in recording grades and related information on the computer as directed by the professional staff.
10. Assist in maintaining various files as directed by the professional staff.
11. Assist in the preparation, distribution and collection of forms needed by the professional staff.
12. Assist in the supervision of special education students in a classroom, learning center, playground and lunchroom, or where applicable. Escort students from class, if necessary.
13. Serve as a good role model.
14. Reinforce the teacher’s directions, activity or skill to be practiced.
15. Practice and drill as directed by the teacher.
16. Build basic English vocabulary skills.
17. Perform other duties as requested by the classroom teachers concerning special education students.
18. Remain confidential regarding school matters such as paperwork, student conduct and family matters.
