Job Description    

 

DESCRIPTION:  The high school math and science instructor has the skills to provide instruction in core mathematics and science. A thorough understanding of the performance expectations will be demonstrated through explicit instruction using a variety of instructional techniques to reach all students. The instructor will regularly use formative assessments to make instructional decisions for lesson planning and instructional delivery. This is critical to student engagement and achievement. Providing alternative and creative methods to assure student achievement is necessary. Demonstrating solid classroom management is expected. Working alongside staff in a professional learning community is crucial to continued student achievement and the implementation of the adopted district curriculum.

1.     Proficient in centering instruction on high expectations for student achievement

2.     Proficient in effective teaching practices

3.     Proficient in recognizing individual student learning needs and developing strategies to address those needs

4.     Proficient in providing clear and intentional focus on subject matter content and curriculum

5.     Proficient in fostering and managing a safe, positive learning environment

6.     Proficient in using multiple data elements to modify instruction and improve student learning

7.     Proficient in communicating and collaborating with parents and the school community

8.     Proficient in exhibiting collaborative and collegial practices focused on improving instructional practice and student learning

9.     Proficient in setting and achieving student learning goals consistent with instructional standards

10. Valid Washington State teaching credentials with appropriate endorsements

11. Successful experience in working with culturally diverse families and communities, or have otherwise demonstrated a commitment to strengthening engagement of a diverse community and skill in communicating with a diverse population

12. Skill and ability to utilize technology to aid instruction, assessment and learning

RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.     Follow the district-adopted curriculum.

2.     Implement performance expectations in classes

3.     Contribute as part of a professional learning community within the departments for application of math and science concepts

4.     Remain current and share best math and science instruction practices and research. Implement reading and writing strategies that are relevant to math and science. Work closely with other departments for application of math and science concepts

5.     Assess student work and implement instructional strategies to help students achieve. Work closely with parents

6.     Analyze student data to assist with determination of current and future courses

7.     Provide supervisory or coaching assistance, if qualified

8.     Perform other job related duties as assigned by supervisor

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Working area will be in a regular education classroom.  Provide instruction in any of the currently offered and anticipated math or science courses: Algebra, Geometry, Algebra II, Physical Science, Biology, or Physics.  Maintain inventory and equipment assigned to the Math and/or Science departments.  Provide programming within budgetary constraints. Teaching assignment will be determined on an annual basis by the building principal.

The teacher must lift and/or move 25 to 50 pounds, and may assist, move, or retrain students with greater weight when required to intervene in student safety issues.

 

While performing the duties of this job, the teacher is frequently required to sit, lift, carry, move about, hear and speak. Teacher may be required to perform extensive work at a computer display terminal.

 

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, or consistent with the subject being taught, but can be abnormally loud on occasion.

 

While performing the duties of this job, the teacher may occasionally work in outside weather conditions and be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, temperature fluctuations, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals commonly used in instruction and/or cleaning.  It may be expected that the individual could be exposed to blood or other potentially infectious materials during the course of their duties. The teacher may be exposed to infectious disease as carried by students.

 

The teacher may be required to travel in school owned or leased vehicles while supervising and assisting students.
